"Following Christ"
Jeremiah 15:15–21 • Romans 12:9–21 • Matthew 16:21–28
As we prepare for worship this Sunday, our readings remind us that following God does not always mean an easy road. Jeremiah is discouraged and hurting. Paul speaks of genuine love, patience, prayer, and perseverance. Jesus tells His disciples that following Him means denying themselves, taking up their cross, and following Him.
Jeremiah’s words remind us that we can bring our struggles honestly to God. He does not promise Jeremiah an easy life, but He does promise, “I am with you to save you.” God’s presence is often more important than an explanation for our circumstances.
Paul reminds us how God’s people are to live in difficult times: “Let love be genuine.” We are to seek peace, care for others, pray continually, and refuse to repay evil for evil. These actions do not earn God’s favor. They flow from the mercy we have already received in Christ.
Jesus takes us to the heart of the matter—the cross. Peter wanted a Messiah without suffering, but Jesus knew that the cross was necessary for our salvation. He then calls us to follow Him, even when that path involves sacrifice.
As we prepare for worship, remember this: we do not follow Christ because the road is always easy; we follow Him because He is faithful. He has carried the cross for us, defeated sin and death, and promises never to abandon His people.
Bring your burdens to worship this Sunday. Bring your questions, disappointments, and hopes. Above all, bring your eyes back to Jesus. He has gone before us, He is with us, and He leads us toward the hope of resurrection and eternal life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, prepare my heart for worship. Strengthen me when I am discouraged, teach me to love genuinely, and give me courage to follow You when the way is difficult. Keep my eyes fixed on Your cross and resurrection and remind me that You are always with me. In Jesus Name. Amen.
